Lake Arenal Sitting al the base of Costa Rica´s most active volcano. Lake Arenal was formed to supply water for agriculture and for hydroelectric energy. The lake is surrounded by spectacular scenery and periodic blastes from the volcano rumble the area and send clouds of smoke billowing skyward Bass style boats.

As with largemouth bass fishing, usually the shorelines are worked with top water or spinner baits early in the morning and as the day progresses jigging methods work best. Guapote are ferocious fighters and will head for any underwater structure when hooked.

About the Fish

Guapote found in most lakes and rivers of tropical temperature in the country and prized for their fighting ability and table fare. Males have a large hump on their foreheads which increase in size during mating season. Whoever named this fish had a sense of humour.

Tropical gar similar to the gar fish of the southern United States, these toothy critters are found in the lagoons and creeks. Mostly caught by accident, some of these reach weights of up to fifty pounds.
